A notable motif that runs through the playtime of the film is the bright yellow jacket the main character wears. But this wasn't a 'I don't mind what you wear' situation, I had always wanted her to wear this colour. Like with every colour, yellow can have several meanings that belong under the term 'colour theory'. I also find the context that the colour is being used can create further meaning. A good example of this is the colour pink being a symbol for innocence and softness but it being used in the context of Dolores Umbridge in the Harry Potter films. I think anyone that has watched the Harry Potter films can agree that the Dolores is far from innocent and softness. For context, this is Dolores Umbridge...
What seems like a stereotypical grandma with her cat themed decorations Dolores is far from that and is mostly abusive towards the students of Hogwarts. This contrast between what colours can mean and then placing them in contradicting scenarios is a really interesting idea to explore. This is just an example of pink being used in this way. I'll be focusing on yellow for my film.
Yellow can be interpreted as the colour of youth or life. The contradictions that I was talking about previously arises when I set my film at night. The phrase 'dead of night' is a good way to contrast the life of yellow. But this is also done to make the character stand out against the dark background. Everything is sleeping and she is alive, riding her bike through the streets. This act of contradictions work in the favour for both the bright yellow of her jacket and the darkness of the environment around her. Either one lending a hand to exaggerate their qualities. The warmth from the yellow makes the character more welcome to the eye.
