I was going through the tester footage I had shot for my initial project and wanted to do more than just 'put it together'. I had started to look at colour within the shots and had really liked the yellows of the jacket that the stand-in actress. There was one particular shot in which the jacket, because of the surrounding environment wasn't the best for highlighting the yellows I decided to try and learn how to pinpoint specific colours within the footage and alter them. Below is a Youtube tutorial in which I was able to follow along which gave me the tips that allowed me to experiment with editing colour. Before After I feel like my first experiment with this type of editing turned out quite well and I'm slowly getting more comfortable with Premiere Pro.

This Reflective Journal is going to be (hopefully) a clear way I can document my progress throughout my final year at UCW. I am aiming to add to this regularly whenever I feel like I have done something that has allowed me to progress as a filmmaker and as a Director in particular.
Director is the role I am aiming to work towards during this year. This is the area that I have enjoyed the most and also found the most rewarding. Because of this, I feel like it is the route I want to go down during and after this final year of uni. Of course I am not the level I want to be and that’s perfectly okay. To get to this level, I am going to set aims that I can try and achieve during this final year so I can say, once the year is up, that I am at a place that I would be happy with going out to the big wide world and pursue a career within the film industry. The aims that I am about to talk about are the areas I feel like I could work on. Experience Experience is something that I am always looking to get. Personally, I learn more by actually doing something practical rather than learning about it in other ways. Getting on-set experience is the main focus for myself this year be it on my own projects or offering help to other peoples. To measure how much experience I have gotten over the year. I feel like being part of twelve separate film projects throughout the whole year would give me ample time to learn as much as I can about being in and around film. I don’t know if that target number is being too ambitious but I think it is necessary to aim that high (even in Covid times). While working towards increasing the output of films I make this year, I’ll be naturally editing some of the stuff from home so... My ability to make films myself So hopefully this section is different enough from the previous one. This section is more focused on the actual ability to make the films. From filming to editing, I’ll be making notes on such stuff as editing techniques I have learnt while working on projects and equipment that I try out. I would admit I don’t have a very gifted mind when it comes to the technical side of filming. Getting further ground work in of the knowledge around the technical side will allow me especially come in handy when working on films that have a pretty bare-bones crew. I prefer to work with less people, so having this knowledge will massively help in getting my ideas across. For example, having a basic understanding of what camera lens is best to use for which situation/ which effect will help with communicating with the D.O.P. or the camera operator. This won’t necessarily be as quantifiable as the previous section. It is more of passive gains of knowledge I’ll be gaining. Scriptwriting Scriptwriting is something I’ve kind of ‘falling into’. There wasn’t anyone writing them really in our class so I started writing them to make myself seem like I could offer them something. That plan hasn’t really worked out as no one has really asked me to write stuff and when they do they ultimately do something else. It’s all good though. I have gradually got better at them and I only want to continue that. Being able to complete a script will tie into working with a small crew. By writing my own scripts I’ll have a further understanding of each film. This will translate in the improved ability to communicate my idea to other people. Cohesion is something that will massively help with the timing in which the film is made. Which that, in itself, also ties into the amount of films I’ll be able to make this year. Scripts can take a long time to complete and there’s a lot of uni work to do so I’m not Stephen King volumes of work. At the time of writing this, I think just seeing how things go is the best thing to aim for but I’ll probably adjust this aim as the year goes on. |
